In this article Madeleine Hayashida, who teaches a course in ancient musical instrument making at the Halau Mele Hawaii, along with historical assist from Peter Buck’s “Arts and Crafts of Hawaii, Vol. IX, Musical Instruments,” and Betty Tatar’s essays in the upcoming Hawaiian music encyclopedia, explains how to make your own Kala’au, the resonant sticks used to accompany the hula, and the Ili’ili, two small lava stones usually waterworn and free of bubbles, held between the fingers of each hand and clicked together by the dancer in the sitting hula in much the same way that castanets are used.
