Rongomatane Ariki VI: historical ceremony at Atiu Island.

On August 9th, 1956, in an interesting blend of traditional Polynesian ritual and Christian ceremony, Tetupu Mataio was proclaimed Rongomatane Ariki on the island of Atiu, in the Lower Cook Islands Group, in succession to his uncle, Rongomatane Maka Kea, who had held that office since 1930 and who died in the Rarotonga hospital on February 15th, 1956, highly regarded as a leader and a man.
